This exercise should be commenced when the dog has to some extent mastered the open search. The object of this exercise is to have the dog locate persons hiding in a building.
As with open searching, if possible dogs should be placed in a line with their handlers outside the building. The person should tease the dogs and then run inside the building and secrete himself in a position which is not to difficult for the dog to locate. A selected handler should then release his dog at the door entrance to the building, using the same challenge, and command as in the open search. There should be no great time delay between the time the criminal disappears into the building and the dogs release. However, the person must be given sufficient time to hide himself.
The handler should follow the dog into the building and encourage the dog to locate the person. When the dog either indicates or locates the person the handler should then give the dog the command to speak and this should then be accomplished with the help of the criminal.
Once the dog has barked at the person, he should then be rewarded by the person who gives the dog the article, then by the handler with praise and play.As the dog becomes more proficient at this exercise, the hiding locations should become harder for the dog. The handler should encourage his dog to sit when he locates the person and then bark.
The final stage in this training is when the person is located by the dog, he is commanded by the handler to come out of the hiding place and a search and escort , similar to that in the open search takes place. The person is then escorted from the building with the dog off lead.
A variety of buildings should be used for this training. The initial training should be done in a building, which allows the dog to locate the person easily, whilst in the latter stages, multistory buildings with many hiding places, should be used.
